A few days ago i decided to replace the water pump on my 89 5.0 its the original water pump and getting tired, but 20 years of corrosion ended with me using a chisel to crack the timing cover surrounding one of the bolts going to the block, a few other bolts broke off in the cover so no biggy. While i have the timing cover off im going to check it for slop...but if it needs replacing im lost on choosing a brand. Anyone have a particular timing chain and gear set band that they favor? im a little hesitant about obtaining one from autozone or something like that
Just about all good aftermarket timing chains are just re-boxed and marked up Cloyes units, so just get yourself the right Cloyes and save yourself the money, they make really good stuff.
Just make sure you get the double chained and gears big step up from the stock single chain makes sooo much of a difference, atleast it did for me made my response much quicker.
Ohh yeah and while your at it you may want to do some research on your cam and you may want to advance your cam a couple of degrees, generally that will give you some more low end grunt with these emissions cams.
thanks guys, now can someone walk me through reinstalling the timing cover...my haynes does just fine but id like to know as much as i can before hand. I've just recently replaced the oil pan gasket with the Fel-Pro one peice...what a pain.
