Flash Tuners

Hello all I have been kicking around the idea of putting a chip on my 7.3 to help with towing my boat.
The vehicle is stock except for a K&N air filter and a straight through 3.5 inch exhaust.
I just wanted to get some opinions of the flash tuners before I do anything as there is a company down here that is pretty highly regarded that has recommended the SCT X3 one to me.

Welcome to FTE. You'll find most of the members here are not too fond of the flash tuners. Instead, most use a custom tuner that offers better power with the added benefit of shift on the fly instead of pulling over, pushing a bunch of buttons, cycling the key, waiting, then starting up again. It's much easier to just hit a button or turn a **** as your driving if you suddenly want more power. You'll find the custom tuners will also help lock / unlock the torque converter better in the tow tunes than the off the shelf stuff you can buy.

Also, not many here are fans of the K&N filter. We've seen too many dusted turbos and dusted engines from them. They work fine on gas motors, but don't filter well enough to stick in front of our turbos for the most part.

Thanks for the reply Chris, my vehicle is a manual so do you think that will have a bearing on which tuner is best.

The custom tuners still offer more flexibility and better performance no matter what tranny you have. I'd look into them.

And if you only are looking for 1 program you can always send the PCM and have it reflashed by a custom tuner. Whatever you decide, just go with a custom tune instead of an off the shelf one.

Thankyou for the advice on tuners,I was really looking for something to just give me a bit more power while towing. I ended up going with an Edge Evolution as I figure if I am not happy with it I could send it to PHP for a custom tune, but so far I am very happy with the improvement in power.
It is difficult for me here in Australia to consider live tuning as I have not found too many people down here that are very familiar with these Super Duties.

You will be happy with just about any plug and play tuner over stock!! But.. if/when you get a chance, a custom tune is a HECK of alot better.

After driving my truck for a while with the Edge the novelty of the extra power soon wore off and I started to really dislike the way it made the truck handle.

The throttle was way too touchy and made driving at slow speeds annoying and the engine seemed to make a lot of noise for the amount of power it was producing.

I have recently fitted a FU Chip from Power Hungry Performance and am extremely happy. The throttle response is very smooth and the noise levels are more in sync with the amount of power the engine is putting out.

On a whole the truck runs a lot smoother and has much better drivability. I am really enjoying driving the truck now compared to driving it with the Edge.

So I would recommend the FU chip from PHP to any one deciding on chips or tuners.

Also I dont work for PHP, I'm just a happy customer that thought I would share my experiences with Chips and Tuners.
