It's pretty straight forward just be careful not to gouge the block when removing the old plug or the new one may leak, i'd recommend replacing it with a brass plug, smear a light coat of RTV silicone around the outer edge and tap it home flush with the block.
I have to pull the drivers side header and starter to gain access to it.
Huh? Which side is the freeze plug leaking on?
I had a freeze plug start leaking on the passenger side behind the motor mount. Luckily I was going to put an oil pump in it so it worked to my advantage. I highly doubt it would of been able to be changed in the truck with the oil pan on. I ended up wedging a body hammer between the freeze plug and frame and slowly lowered the motor down with the floor jack. It pressed it right in. There was absolutely no room to swing a hammer to tap it in.
Yeah, the passenger side is leaking right by the starter, I will end up removing my header & starter to get to this. A buddy of mine suggested installing a block heater instead of replaceing the plug, any thoughts on that....
