I have a 1998 Ranger 4X4 w/ a 3.73 limited slip. 225,000 miles. There is a noise, a rotatinal roar, in the rear end. Because of the nature of the noise, my guess is the ring gear has a "worn spot" in it. I havent pulled the inspectin cover yet, as I figure that with the years and milage, it's time for a new chunk anyway. What is the best (by best I mean simplest) swap available. I would prefer some sort of locker instead of "limited slip". I am very skilled and have good tools, But I have no rear end experience with the ford 8.8 rear ends. Is there a source for an exploded view of this somewhere? Thanks.......Spiky
Are you sure it is an 8.8 most where 7.5 the easiest is another ranger pop and swap they where the same for a lot of years. And 3.73 was the most common. I have used the lunch box lockers before with good results and they are simple to put in.
The simplest thing to do would be to swap out the entire rear axle for a good one, then install the locker. That way you don't have to deal with the gears. I may be misinformed, but it's my understanding that backlash, etc. don't have to be set with the installation of brands like LockRight.
I have put the lock rites in Dana 35's and it takes about 1 hr. You just replace the center with the new one. Check the clearances and refill with fluid and you are good to go. The newer ones are pretty civilized the older ones made the trucks, jeeps drive a little quirky.
