cold start sequence

I was wondering if this was normal:
Anytime I start my truck after its been sitting a while (cold start) it goes through what seems to be a warm up sequence. It idles at about 1500rpm for a minute or so and then drops to about 1000rpm for a few seconds and then back up to 1500rpm for 15 seconds or so and finally returns to normal idle range (about 500 or so). I bought my truck used and have since rebuilt the engine but its always done that. Comments??????

cold start sequence

It should start at ~1200RPM, then drop to ~800. Pull the codes.

Mine on cold start up idles to 1500 then drops down to 1000 after about 10-20 seconds and then when it is completely warm 750.

Check the Idle Air Control solenoid. The procedure is in the Haynes manual. Very common for these to go out, the test is pretty simple.
