Cab mount help

I have been doing some research. I need to replace my cab mounts. Is it possible just to unbolt the cab from the frame and jack it up some and weld new ones on? Or do I have to take the whole cab off and if so whats that all entail? I need to get this done cause I think its starting to mess with the shifter for the auto trans. Making it hard to shift gears sometime. Also the body is making some wicked noises. I appreciate any help. Done a body lift before but never taken a cab off. Thanks guys and gals.

In a perfect world, you would be able to just unbolt them and jack it up. The problem is the things rust up and seem like they are welded. You will be better off cutting them off with a sawzall. jack the cab up and replace them with new mounts and bushings.

All the parts are still available through a number of sources, including Ford last time I checked

Should I get new bushings then also? Its just the front cab mounts that are bad. I might try seing how hard its gonna be to get it unbolted. I got a quote for $400 to have a shop do it.

The fronts will be the toughest to get to. You have to remove a trap door o either side to get at the bolts. You're probably going to destroy the bushings or what left of them when you cut them off anyway. If you did a lift you should be able to tackle the mounts.

There are actually 4 pieces to each mount. The bolt, the top, the bushing and the bottom. The top is really a big washer. The bottom has a nut welded to the bottom. THe bolt and washer will go into the recess. THe bushing will be sandwiched and bolt up to the bottom.

Some guys just use washers and hockey pucks to make their own mounts. If yo do a search here, you can find out more about that approach.

Alrighty. If I can get away with just jacking the body up and doing it then I am game for doing it myself. Grandpa welded for a living so he can put the new ones in.

So I'll have to unbolt the 4 bolts for the cab, the rad support, trans linkage, radiator shield, and steering shaft. Anything else to jack the body up a little?

Are you talking about Cab corners or cab mounts? There is no welding involved in replacing cab mounts. You also probably won't be able to unbolt them, you'll most likely have to cut them off. Once you get them cut off, I'd try to jack it up without dismantling too much. You shouldn't have to get it up too high to slide the new mounts back in place.

I believe he is refering to the welded on cab mount that is part of the cab,not the body bushings.correct ?

Ya, the welded on part to the cab that has the little plate you have to remove to see the bolt. Mine are bad almost like every other old Ford I have seen. I can take a picture to clarify.

IDK that you can get them from Ford any more but I know that Dennis-Carpenter is the only MFG making an almost exact duplicate of the original ford cab mounts. Any other mounts sold are a one piece stamped steel piece of crap IMO!

Replacing the cab mounts is a job! you might be able to do this with the cab just jacked up but I found it much easier to do with the cab removed from the truck. You can get better angles on the welds with the cab removed rather than lifted up! How are the floors on your truck? Usually when the cab mount is rusted to the point it needs replacing, you will find that your floor will need patching as well!

You will want to buy new cab bushings when you are done, LMC sells a nice OEM looking kit with the correct hardware.

Sorry,
I was misunderstanding what you were trying to do. I agree with Dynamic. Its going to be a whole lot easier to remove the cab, and replacing all the bushings.

Last summer I replaced the floor boards. Now its time for the cab mounts.

How hard and long is it gonna take to get the cab off? I am on summer break before I go back to college and gonna be doing it by myself. Only time I have is during the week after work.

pull the front clip

disconnect anyting connected to the cab (parking brake cable, harnesses, speedo, etc)

cut, grind, swear, and remove the cab bushings and hardware.

Buy a case of beer, invite buddies over for a BBQ and have them help you remove the cab. 4 strong guys can remove the cab easy enough.

start cutting off the stock mounts, reweld new mounts ... reverse the removal process and reinstall everything with new rubber bushings and hardware.

I see. Well I got a tractor so I think I could pick the cab off. Its just the time and effort to get everything unbolted I guess.
