Using Low Range on Steep Hills?

I was wondering if it would be feasible to disconnect the actuator for the front diff and use my low range for climbing the steep hills in the mountains, I understand that there will be speed limitations (top speed of 30-35mph) and I’m not trying to break any records, just trying to figure out how to minimize transmission temps and make it a little easier pull. I used to do this in my 1988 F150 and it worked fine. As often as I go to this destination it wouldn’t make since for me to get a bigger truck as I am rather happy with the one I have, and it pulls the trailer just fine on regular trips.
Specs:
1997 150 SCSB 4x4, 4.6, Auto, 3.55gears w/ locker, 33” tires, trans cooler, 4 core alloy radiator. Intake, Headers, Exhaust, TB and Spacer.
Trailer is 5000-5500 lbs
Thanks.

Using low range in 4x2 is done by many a people with no ill effects. 35 mph is a bit too fast though.

Would 25 be a more reasonable speed? keeping in mind that i'll be on asphalt and wanting to do this for 30-45 miniuets. I know i can go all day in 4low, but these are different circumstances using 4x2.

25 at most would be ok I think. You just don't want to over rev the motor.

agreed, as like any ford small block, this thing pulls best in any gear @ 4000 rpms, but in low i would keep 3500 as my threshold

I haven't had a need to use 4-lo on the pavement, but I do it pulling my 5th wheel around my property all the time. Not because I need the power, but because I know it is easier on the truck and particularly the transmission when backing up. I disconnected the solenoid to the locking front hubs so now I have to manually lock them if I want to actually use 4wd (which is RARE anymore). I wouldn't hesitate to use 4-lo on a steep hill if I needed to.
