Radio Problems

My original - style round radio quit working. It has power to it (still lights up). Even gets warm like the tube is warming up. No sound though. Checked the connections in the back, removed the speaker grille above the windshield and checked the connections, nothing loose that I can find..

Any advice? Should I start shopping for a new one?

Thanks!

Used to be you could take the tubes down to Walgreens and test them, but those days are gone! Tubes are still available from Radio Shack and some other places, special order, not cheap. You can also have it gutted and fiulled with modern solid state parts, though I assume you're still 6v? Not sure if they can do that.

Symptoms sound like a problem with the high voltage power supply. Probably a bad vibrator.

i my area we have an "old radio and tv" guy. he has a stock of 10,000 tubes at home and he repairs tube type tvs and radios as a hobby (he's in his 80;s). you may be able to find someone like him in your area. good luck. dick r

go to Radio Daze.com They are in florida. I bought a solid state vibrator and a buffer capacitor from them. The vibrators do not vibrate so they last longer and are quieter. They suggest you replace the buffer with this.

Do they also sell a flux capacitor?

Yeah, it is still a 6 volt set-up.

Good advice everyone. Thanks.

Ok rookie question: is the "vibrator" part of the radio unit itself, or is it the box next to the steering column the wiring runs to???

My 57 has original radio, and works great.....when it wants to...LOL
must be a bad tube or loose connection.....it would be great if it would work when I am driving it,instead of being tempormental and work when I tap the dash...haha

Does the radio "buzz" when you turn it on?

It's in the power supply. .....which should be the "box".........if it's not buzzing, it could be bad......they do last a good long time though...

I sent you a PM.

I sent you a PM.

No buzz from the "box". With the ventilation holes in it. Better description? I'll check my PM. Thanks!
