Question Hole in the intake!?

I have a '86 F250 with a 6.9 Diesel equipped with a Banks Turbo.

I don't know a lot about diesels... this being my first and I bought it pre-owned. I have learned a little here and there doing small repairs to it but my question is this.

I was replacing the return fuel lines and O-rings that go on the injectors for the return caps/nipples. I was also trying to clean the thing up as the top of the motor is covered in oil and fuel.

I noticed that on the back of the riser of the intake there is a hole that's about an inch in diameter. I can't find any hoses or anything that is suppose to go to it. There is no filter or anything for it. It is just sucking in air/dirt/oil and whatever else from the top of the intake. On the inside of my intake there is a film of oil and grime and it all trails from this hole.

What is this hole for? Do I need to plug it? Do I need to rig up some sort of filter for it? Is there a hose that is suppose to go to it? Please help.

Thanks!

Hole in the intake!?

I originally thought maybe it was something like that... but I don't know where the hose from the crank case would come from. Usually it would be in the top of the intake, heads, or valve covers or somewhere on the front of the motor. There is a vent hose coming from the front of the motor near the oil filler neck and it goes to a canister attached to the Turbo/Air Cleaner Assembly.

This hole in the intake is a machined hole about an inch in diameter on the backside of the "rise" that the bottom of the Air Cleaner Assembly sits on. This hole is probably from the factory since the previous owner never lifted the hood other than to check oil. The hole goes directly into the air intake where there suppose to only be clean air. But the inside of my intake is covered in oily grime.

The local Ford dealership won't tell me anything. They want me to bring it in and ofcourse charge me. Talked to a couple diesel shops in town and they say "We don't know.. bring it in and we'll take a look" and ofcourse want to charge me.

Hole in the intake!?

On the 6.9 and the 7.3 engines ... the hole you are refering to is the hole where the crankcase ventilator should be. Also on either side of the larger hole is two machined and tapped holes that will hold the crankcase ventilator in place. There should be a 1 inch hole in the valley pan for the ventilator to mount and drain back to the block.
If the ventilator isnt there --- go get one and install it, otherwise dirt and all the other crap from the atmosphere will get into the engine.
There should be a rubber grommet to seal the valley pan after the ventilator is installed and also a rubber grommet for the ventilator to seal around the intake. the bolts will be uss thread. You will need a 1/2 inch wrench to tighten them.
Any problems ... give a hoot!

Question Hole in the intake!?

I would check with BANKS, e-mail them call them whatever it takes. On my 86 6.9 there was pvc valve on the back of the engine that hooked to the intake where you described. When the turbo was added I belive changes were made to this setup. Banks should be able to send you insructions.Regaurdless block the hole off before you drive it anymore.

Hole in the intake!?

Thanks everyone for pointing me in the right direction. Turns out my Turbo was an aftermarket addition. My Banks Turbo is different than the sidewinder that is popular now... it's similar but the air cleaner assembly is a big Aluminum Rectangular box. I have a good idea of what has happened. More thatn Likely when whoever added this Turbo... they didn't block off this hole when that valve was relocated to the side of the air cleaner assembly. As for the hole in the valley of the intake... there's a tube going into it from the Turbo. I assume it is draining the oil that lubes the bearings in the turbo. There is a oil supply line that T's off from the oil pressure guage that goes to the Turbo. As for a drain on the CDR Valve..... It's draining it all over the top of my intake!!!

I have to T the drain line from both the Tubo and CDRV into the Valley Hole and then plug the one on the intake where the CDR was originally located. Now the truck has been driven 100,000 miles plus with this hole in the intake... thats got to be good on the cylinder walls! Well again... I appreciate everyone pointing me in the right direction... THANNKS!
