Howdy all. I have a 78 2wd auto with 105,000 miles. Took her out on a 300 mile journey where she performed well at highway speeds (65-70 mph) untill she started to loose power and almost stall out. I pulled over to let her rest a bit, lifted the hood and smelled gas. Does the fuel pump give you an indication that its about to fail or does it just go? I have a new one on order but I still gotta drive to get it. How much damage am I doing to her by driving?
Fuel pumps can fail in many ways, most common is either not pumping fuel or leaking.
Leaking can be internally, or externally. Internal leaking can pump gas into the oil, where it can wash the engine bearings out rather quick. External leaking can be a huge fire hazzard. Both waste gas, which is a bit pricey these days......
Look at the oil level on the dipstick. If higher than normal, then gasoline is likely leaking internally as mentioned by Rogue_Wulff and Harte3. Smell the dipstick. After replacing the fuel pump, change the oil and filter if in doubt. It would be cheap insurance.
