Ah, funny. While the email addy is .ca I do live in Tennessee. However, I'll take either. I can just harvest the tach which is the only part I really need anyway and I can convert RPM between metric and imperial in my head really fast. (Yeah, I'm just smart that way ).
Grew up not to far from you, in Cookstown. Most of my family still lives in the Collingwood, Wasaga Beach area.
Meh, couldn't remember where you were, so wasn't actually sure if you were looking for miles or kilometres!! I was thinking you were stateside, but had doubts in my mind.
I've never looked at disassembling the instrument cluster, just taken them out in their entirety. Want to try a tach from a 302? Got one of them here somewhere.....I'd just avoid redlining the diesel to that RPM!!

This may work, Ford_Six is trying to find a gas tach to replace the diesel tach on a truck he is rebuilding. If you and he are ok with it maybe we can work a 3 way deal. He is in Idaho.
The tach pops out of the cluster pretty easily. Just pull the 5-6 screws that hold the plastic cover. The cover and spacer will come away easily, then use a small pick or something to gently pry the tach out of cluster. Very simple.
Just wondering what happened to yours, or how you tracked it down to the tach? I suspect you had a thread about it somewhere that I missed though.....
I'll look today to see what I have for tachs and what sort of shape they are in.
There is a thread or 2 somewhere. My issue is that the tach needs a "warm-up" period before it kicks in (like a capacitor issue, dunno). It started out just needing 60-90 seconds or so but now its taking 15-20 minutes.
I've clean all the connectors at the trans, ECC and everywhere in between. Replaced the tach sensor a few times (I now have a brand new spare). Also, traced and tested as many of the wires as I could. While I'm not 100% certain I feel that the tach is my next logical step.
Finally resolved. Got the tach replaced with no luck. Turned out to be the ECU (ECC, whichever). Pulled it out and found some water damage, replaced it and the truck has never shifted better.
Huge thanks to Greywynd and Ford_Six for working to get me the tach. Now I have a spare.
Interesting side note. Once the ECU was replaced the tach started working right away but the O/D light started flashing. Went to a trans shop to have the codes read and they reset the FIPL (TPS) for me to clear it up. I had it set to low (I think about .92 at idle). The interesting thing being that I had replaced and set the FIPL months before I started having tach issues and it did not complain then. Guess it was having issues for quite some time.
Glad you got it resolved Bob, shame it took so long to figure out! Where was the ECC/ECU located on your truck? They seem to hide in a few places, and am wondering if the water issue could be avoided by relocating some of these.
