I havent been on here in a while. Been crazy busy. I found something today and was wondering if it would work. I found a 7.3L IDI motor out of a school bus and was wondering if I can put it in my 85? Looks to be in good shape, but for the price I dont want to pass it up. Will it work?
yes, it all bolts up the same. there are a few differences. the water separator in your 85 is on the firewall, the 7.3l is in the fuel filter. also the glow plug setup is different, but you can use either one. other then that, your pretty much good to go. just make sure that the sca's were monitored. why would you wanna go 7.3l? the 6.9 is a great engine, less prone to cavitation.
Yea, All the IDI's are basically the same except some mentioned trivial stuff that can be swapped over from your 6.9 ... However the 7.3 glow system/engine harness is better then the 85 and would be an upgrade requiring a little wiring rework.
I'm doing nearly the exact same thing right now, replacing a 86 6.9 with a 91 7.3.
Only I'm twisting it a bit, I want to keep the 7.3 engine harness/glow system for my 6.9, so I'm swapping the 6.9 stuff to the 7.3, the 7.3 is going in my 86, then putting the 7.3 harness/glow system on the 6.9 for later use!
Does it run ??
Any oil on/in the water??
Can you test strip the coolant??
If it's a deal what do you have to lose, you could likely get some parts and then scrap rest!
I know how yo feel Rick. I have wanted to find a turboed 6.9/7.3 1 ton 4x4 manual for a long time. It could even have a totally screwed engine. But they all seem to go for to much or are so far away it is not feasible to buy them.
