Hints Tips for Fuel Pressure regulator replacement

Ok campers, If anyone's been in the bronco II area..I'm sure they have seen my little "Babs" (my nickname for this little runner) with it's problem(s)

Did some basic diagnostic work...and found that if the FPR has low/no vacuum? Then it is allowing fuel to leak back into the intake via the vacuum hose. Yep...finally figured out the gassy smell when I start it warm issue!! Last month or so it's really been stinky.

Anyrate-- I found Napa has a FPR for about $25 bucks that will replace this one. I'd spend more $$ for a higher 'quality' one---but I'm going to also change out the disty for a rebuilt one with a new pickup and TFI module. (This truck has gotten a nasty habit of 'bucking' power at about 50-70 MPH..everyone's pointing at the TFI---but the fuel leaking into the intake at low vacuum has me wondering--so I'm going to change both units out and get it over with)

I've not found any advice or specs on how to do this change out. The shop manual is a bit vague and does not list the torque specs for the fuel pressure regulator to the fuel rail bolts. Plus I'm paranoid about fuel leaks--due to the connectors looking a bit cheesy.

It's the 2.9 engine...two bolts holding it together. Any suggestions or advice would be quite helpful!

"This truck has gotten a nasty habit of 'bucking' power at about 50-70 MPH." That would be the bad FPR.

You might want to check for any stored codes in the computers CM before changing out anything else.
If you do not know how go to this link:
Ford Fuel Injection How To Run a Self-Test

Tighten two retaining screws on the FPR to 8-11 N-m (71-97 in-lb).

For FPR R&R use this PDF:

NP with the pulling codes. Only reason I didn't do it on Sunday? I forgot the shop manual and list of what codes did what LOL. So I just ran basics and found the FPR was leaking fuel into the vacuum line at low vacuum. Oddly enough? Keep it on 18-20" of vacuum using the vacuum pump and engine running----Not a drip. Get the vacuum below 10 or so...or in the case of how we discovered it---engine off and the system slowly bleeding back--then it starts running out the hose. Must be a very oddball break in the rubber internal workings.

The other question I did have would be in reference to the return line. It's a 4" or so black plastic like tube that goes to the spring loaded quick connect. It's attached to the FPR using a barbed connection.

I have concerns about this being able to be removed and reused----Would my concerns be justified? Or can this be done without risk of fuel leaking?
