I drove my '46 up to the show in Roseburg, OR yesterday. THREE of us had
42-47 1/2 tons, and three more guys stopped to talk about theirs that were under development. It seems like they are slowly increasing in numbers on the road.
I was parked next to a 30's something pickup that had the running boards removed. 60 in. side pipes were mounted on the two forward running board brackets which had been shortened, with the result of pipes hiding most to all of frame below cab and the brackets. The front of the pipes came through reliefs at the bottom of front fenders. It was something I have been thinking about for quite a while, and may end up doing.
Also have been thinking of removing the center bar of the hood, upon which the spear mounts, opening up a little sight into the engine compartment. I have an extra hood to work on. Never satisfied.
The trip was 155 highway miles total. At 65 mph steady, 2800 rpm, over and down 8 high passes and several smaller, the 292 gave 19.3 mpg. Not bad for a 50 year old engine!
I put this engine together with mileage in mind, not being able to go down the horsepower road. 3.00 8 in. rear, 9.2 CR, mildest Isky cam, low ratio rockers, 2V Autolite, regular output oil pump, with the truck as light as I could make it at 2800 lbs, and a '46 three speed 'Top Loader'. The plugs look perfect with the ground strap timing mark right in the middle of the bend. Stock distributor has new internals including weights and cam/rotor, a Pertronix I with stock coil and resistor. Carb is a 1.08 venturi with all choke removed including shaft and plate, with 49 jets. Estimated HP is 200, which has proven to be adequate with the weight.
It would be a milestone if with a little more tweaking, some 10/30 rather than 15/40 oil, me loosing some weight, removal of mech. radiator fan, using synthetics in trans and rear, if it could break into 20 mpg.
Two new 4V carbs are on the shelf waiting to be installed, but they will have to be patient .
Hey, come to think of it, the trip was with my wife. So next time no passenger and I wont have to loose weight, ha ha.
