Timing belt help

Changed the timing belt on my 97 Ranger 2.3 appx 2 months ago with help of a friend (decent mechanic available and insisted!). Had trouble deciding what the real timing marks were (found out he had no experience on a 2.3) based on the Chilton book. Decided on the diamonds and put it together. Ran OK but it had some other issues at the time. Stumbled when cold, OK pick-up and felt like it was occaisionally detonating on the highway. Pulled it down yesterday and found the cam mark off a couple of teeth. Lined up all the marks, cranked thru by rachet wrench. Had good compression and no metallic sounds. Thought life was good. Put it rest of the way together. Turns over great but not a lick of fire. Verified fuel pressure and no spark. Checked the crank senor to ensure I didn't do something accidently. Other than a little oil on it, wiring and all are untouched. No blown fuses. Coincidental that the crank sensor failed? I drove it into the garage but rolled it out. Checked the other threads here. One stated he had to go appx 10 degrees off the mark to get his running. I don't believe that's the answer. My last 2.3 experience was a '71 Pinto with a German built 2.3 that I autocrossed. Could change that belt in 30 minutes or less. Thanks for any help here!!!
