1989 4x4 xlt 2.9 auto. Had to reset the radio and clock often after cranking the truck,I put in a new battery and battery cable, fixed that problem but now (not all the time)often the engine will die when slowing to a stop or placing in reverse to back up. I removed the IAC and cleaned it It's onle 3 years old and was nto very dirty.I then cleaned the Throttle body. Then I drove around the block and as I put it in reverse to back into my driveway it went dead again. It always starts back up easily. Any advice? thanks
Paw Paw, I think you are probably right. It seems to shut off more when I try to back up. What would changing the battery and cable have to do with this?
If this stall problem didn't come about until after the battery & cable replacement, IAC & throttle body cleaning, about all I can think of is, did you go through the computer idle strategy relearn routene????
If that doesn't help, does it stall if you turn on the AC, or turn the steering wheel, so they add load to the engine, such that it has to have the IAC compensate, like it does when you put the tanny in gear????
If it stalls with the A/C on & the steering wheel turned, suspect the IAC.
If it stalls only when the tranny is shifted into gear, suspect something is going on with the tranny or torque converter.
Maybe it's coincidence, or maybe it's Murphys Law messing with you!!!! lol
Paw Paw I don't have an OD off and On switch, mine is used by moving the gear lever. I did the base idle technique you advised me to do.I turned the wheel with a/c on and put in reverse it didn't die so I will drive it tomorrow and see. Thanks for all your help.
