im planning to buy a 01 excursion with the v10 engine. was wondering what kind of mileage i could expect? my sole purpose for the suv is passenger room and the pulling power for a 30ft travel trailer and i dont find the price to be very bad (6500.00) with 167,000 miles and the vehicle is in great shape. would i be waistring my money on the v10 and the fuel mileage??
I love my V10, and I too pull a travel trailer that is over 30 feet (it is actually about 35 feet). Don't plan on any better than 10 mpg around town empty, and 8 towing. Some do a little better, some do a little worse, but all seem to be in that range I think.
You can check out fuelly.com and see what other excursions are getting. I've been real surprised in ours, never getting less that 11.8MPG combined hwy/city driving. Highest was 12.6 on a trip to Oklahoma.
around town 12 ...highway 16 ...towing 8-9 ....recent trip from east tn to orlando fl 16.6 was the best ( filled up with no ethanol gas ) i've gotten 10 mpg towing again with the no ethanol gas....but you have to keep your foot off of the pedal.

Find something with lower milage to it, With 167,000 miles its just about time for a eng and trans overhaul. BIG BIG BUCKS
there are plenty of V10s going well past 200k with no rebuilds. tranny may be iffy though. i wouldnt be too scared of the 167k miles on these trucks considering what some members have on theres.
That's one thing I took in to consideration when we bought ours. It's just under 100,000 miles, but from all the v10's I saw going over 300,000, even some in the 400,000's with no rebuilds, I felt pretty confident. And if it comes up, I'll have it done, but hoping for the best.
i really like the ex because of the passenger room and the idea of the pulling power, but im not to happy about the mpg that they get though. my wife wants to purchase a gmc yukon with the v8 and the third seat. they are nice suv's but i dont think the pulling power would be comparable. as for the mpg on the gmc it would be like night and day compared to the ex. im still drawn to the ex though lol.
theres plenty of others that have not seen much better. ofcourse you cant take one persons mpg for the baseline. driving style, location(this more then people think) both play a huge role in it. he asked what we got...i told'em what i got simple as that.
Here's my stats from my 02 Ex with V10 2wd and 3.73 gears
. I haven't been tracking for long. No towing miles either. Best so far has been 13.8, all highway at 75 mph and worst is 10.2 which was mostly city driving.
BTW, those of you wanting to check mileage, PLEASE do not rely on the overhead computer, they are notoriously inaccurate.
I'd suggest keeping a mileage log, and making sure your odometer is correct by clocking it against a 50, 75, 100, etc. mile drive down the interstate. On one of my trucks, I had to do a correction factor to correct for how far off the odometer was... which meant I was getting almost .5 mpg better than I thought I was getting.
