OK, i drive an 05 F-150 Lariat with 79k miles on it so far. On my message board it said to check charging system and shortly after everything requiring battery power shut down, gauges, radio, ac, lights and blinkers. I have looked at the battery and I do not see anything out of the ordinary. Anybody have any advice? I would like to avoid taking into a shop.
First welcome to the FTE. You should first check the battery with a voltage tester. If under 12 volts, charge it and recheck voltage. Then check voltage with engine running to determine if the altenator is charging. Most auto parts stores will check your altenator and battery for free.
Mine did that, alternator was shot. My charge gauge dropped to L my abs lights came on. I tried to make the 8 mile trip home. At 6 miles in, my gauges quit working, all the lights shut off, radio quit. Truck ran for about 1 more mile. Stopped at the stop sign a mile from home, truck died, wouldn't hardly crank. I ran the battery down to nothing. The headlights came on real dim, I guess the relay's hang open with a low battery. The switch was off. I put a different battery in to get home. Everything worked till that battery ran out of juice. The next day I checked the charge with a volt meter, it read about 11 volts. Took the alternator to Napa, they tested it and it failed. This was 2 weekends ago when it happened to me. My truck is an '04.
ETA: Before the alternator died everything was fine. I already drove for about 60 miles. I made a quick stop at a gas station on the way home, when I restarted the truck, that's when everything start going haywire.
Always start with the battery but I would bet money on that it is your alternator. I had some issues in my old car and my Jeep with alternators and this is exactly what would happen to them.
