You still running that big clunky VR? The ones we have like that on our tractors are adjustable when you take the cover off... Points and contacts to get dirty.. if it's mechanical I'd go back to the solid state ones, then check the wire harness again. If you're getting 16+ volts I'd say maybe your F terminal on the alternator is getting 12v when it's not supposed to be - aka shorted to the battery or something.
a 70 amp alternator is going to put out the same voltage. It will still be too high of a voltage. The only difference is that it will charge the battery slower, which does not fix your problem. Voltage is a measure of intensity, even if it's charging slower, it's still too "intense" for the battery.
lol, ive got a ton to do on my own baby. bandaids can only go so far on joes truck. i thing theres an issue with the wiring on the vr. hard to tell whats goin on because his wires get fed into a maze of electrical tape and are unable to follow. its so hacked and rigged it worth callin up painless wiring and starting fresh and new. all he would need then is a new ignition switch so he can ditch all those switches on the dash.
ya, like i was tellin joe, i never messed with a vr before cause i only deal with chevy. i just hooked it back up like she was. i wish i had my truck there to mimic it. my baby runs and charges perfectly lol
we tried checking a wiring diagram but it was too fuzzy to read. and joe, that wire should arc when theres power to it since its getting power to the post from the battery.
