Exhaust question
While I was sitting behind my wifes 99 expedition in my honda, a new expedition pulled up along the light next to hers. What I thought was odd was the muffler on the new expeditions "hang" out near the rear tire. I looked at the dealer the next day and that is how they are installed. Mine is recessed back near the spare.
Question, why did they do that? Is there a rotting problems with condensation or something? If you were to offroad, I think you would certainly hit it on something.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Dec-01 AT 10:46 AM (EST)]I think that is a secondary muffler or spark arrestor on the newer models that can be seen hanging just before the exhaust tip. I am sure that there is a regular muffler up under the X as well. The visible unit on the newer models looks quite a bit smaller than the OEM muffler on my '98.

I actually had the same question you did. I went to my local dealer and started to do a little research (no, not cause I had extra time or was that curious, but because my truck was in the shop YET AGAIN)! However, I found the answer to your question.
Motor size! The 5.4 Exy's have a larger muffler that causes it to stick out further that the 4.6's. It is the only way that I know of to tell the 2 apart. The 5.4 is larger and sticks out where as the 4.6's muffler is hidden.
