I went with Interstate Brand batteries. Here in Florida the heat is a killer on batteries. The battery went last week on my wife's 07 Nitro. Three batteries in one week is no fun!
I replaced my batteries for the first time three weeks ago. I noticed the truck struggling to start and I got the "Check Brake System" error message on startup (has nothing to do with the brake system but everything to do with low power). I replaced both batteries with the Optima Red Tops. More cranking amps! You have to use the supplied adapters to make it fit snug. Yes, it was costly, but I now have better batteries than OEM and they are sealed AGM. Got 'em at Advance Auto and they track your purchase for the warranty period. I had a yellow top in my F150. When mine die, I'll be getting 2 more of them.
IMHO, you guys replacing just one of a set of two or more batteries are making a huge mistake . . . unless the other battery(ies) is/are nearly new as well. It is nearly always more expedient to replace the pair or set. Even though the remaining battery(ies) show good, it (they) will be an unequal partner(s) to a new battery and cause the life of both/all to be shortened.
Of course, if this is a warranty job, I guess you take what they give you.
In all the years I've run multiple battery systems, I've only ever replaced one of a set one time. The other three on this one were less than a year old and tested good.
Larry, Ford will only replace them if they show bad. That is why only one got replaced. I agree with you that it is not the "correct" way to do it but you know how warranty crap goes. They will probably be replacing both batteries next time sooner than later.
I've replaced the batteries 3 times total since owning the truck(08' 450) under warranty and I have a feeling that it is going to always be under warranty. Alternator is outputting fine so it's gotta be Ford's batteries.
