I have a 1996 F350 with dana 60 and 2 leaf stock springs. i just installed a plow and would like to get add a leafs on it before the stock springs begin to sag.
There is a full length add a leaf or a short version that can order. both styles install under the 2 leaf pack. Through my research, the full length is a more forgiving ride, and doesn't limit suspension travel as much. the short version is a harsher ride, but i read it holds the lift longer - also read the longer ones hold the lift longer?
i'm not concerned about ride quality and the difference between the 2 styles is probably pretty small. i'm also not overly concerned about suspension travel as the truck spend most of its time on pavement anyway. the longer one are around $150, and the shorter ones are about $100. The price difference doesn't really matter to me either.
so my question is which stlye will hold the lift the longest? any other factors i haven't considered? other pros/cons to either style?
You don't want the short ones because you have a full taper spring and you need to stick with a full tapered add a leaf which runs the entire length of the leaf spring. Even the long add a leaf is no good unless it's a full taper designed specifically for your vehicle. So just make sure you get a full tapered add a leaf which will ride better than a non tapered and keep the springs functioning like they are supposed to.
thanks for the reply. none of the ads i've seen for the full length add a leaf mention anything about a "full taper". they list it fitting the truck, but thats it. what do you mean by full taper? i'm not fimiliar with the term.
so i'm getting ready to buy a set in the next week or two. any other thoughts? i figure there has to be more than one person on the site who can speak from experience on the topic.
i'm here looking for opinions on which one to buy, so no. i don't know which set to get. the only advice i've received so far is for the full length version. here are links to a set by tuffcountry, and a set by skyjacker. there are others out there, but i'm looking for opinions on what set will work the best for my application. if they all perform exactly the same, then i'll buy the cheapest set i can find. but if one set is better than other, i'll spend the extra bucks for it.
Can't tell if those are full tapered or not but you can always call and ask but don't waste your money on a non tapered. When I say tapered I mean the springs are thick in the middle and get thinner as they go along so your add a leaf needs to match this design. Are you looking for a kit with u bolts as well or are you going to try to reuse yours?
