Hello intro & question

Hi all, I am a new owner of a well used 7.3 1997 F 250, 5 speed, 2wd. 234k was running good until it developed a bad miss, no power, no smoke. I am new to diesels but decent on gas engines. So I am learning as I go.
I have a question about the wastegate lever. Should it be free and easy to move by hand with the engine off? I can't move this one at all. I have not used any force, but can't budge it by hand. Can this cause a bad miss?
So far I love the truck, I am surprised by the power and acceleration. I live in the hills in Western NY, and it does very nice. I tow sheep & pigs for my kids in 4H. We also have a camper & I am also addicted to old cars so I am always dragging something home.
Thanks in advance for any help offered and I hope to be able to help down the road.

Thanks,

Joe

Are you talking about the wastegate or the exhaust back-pressure valve? The EBPV should move to the open position as the engine warms. Does it not move at all? How does it idle? Does it miss only when revved?

Welcome to FTE. This site has many knowledgeable people here that are happy to lend a hand.

When posting, one useful tip would be to have a portion of your issue in the title of your post. Generic titles may not draw the right people in to help with your problem.

I would check the valve cover harnesses first, outside and inside connections. Two on each head in the valley area, one in front and one in back. Pull apart and see if you have any burnt pins. Under valve cover harness may need replacing too if bad. You can buy as one unit

There is no wastegate on these turbos either.

Forgot to add, welcome to fte.

You are right it is the EBPV, I saw the wastegate reference in the wrong section, mixed it up, dam newbie!
The EBPV won't move with the engine off, didn't try when running. I will later. This may be a non issue. I just noticed it didn't move when I was looking around and I thought it should.

The miss is both at ide and when reving. It came out of nowhere. Truck was running fine and just started ot miss and lose power. Had to keep it in 3rd and keep the revs up to make it home.

Thanks, I saw wastegate mentioned and confused it with the EBPV.
See, you guys are teaching me already.

Unfortunately no history with this beast.

when was the last time it had injector orings replaced?

???? what is the recommended milage for this? will bad orings cause a sudden change like this?

wheres the last place you bought fuel?

I am about 3/4 thru the tank when it started, normal place I buy fuel.
switched tanks no difference.

Thanks,
Joe
