stupid question

Gonna put new front manuale locking hubs on my truck ( it has original manuale locking hubs on it 83 F350 passenger side no longer engages) Ihave heard that there is no reason to jack it up but I just want to make sure that it is ok to do it this way. Done alot of research at this sight doesn't look that difficult but never says weather it should be jacked up or not.

stupid question

No such thing as a stupid question. Stupid answer maybe, like this one:

I have done this swap three or four times and to be honest, I cannot remember if I ever jacked it up or not!?? I think I would just in case, better safe than sorry. I am pretty sure there is no really need for just the hub swap.
Funny that I cannot remember. Guess it was about 4 years ago the last time I did it, but dang, I am not old enough to lose my memory!

if your just changing the lock out no need to lift it
If your removing the whole hub then yes of course you have to lift it

stupid question

When you have the lockout off it is a good time to grease and tighten the wheel bearings, but you will have to lift it for that.

stupid question

If you want to make sure that the lockouts are working properly, you will need to put the transfer case in 4 hi and the tranny in nuetral, engage that side, jack up that side, and then turn the wheel. Engaged the driveshaft should turn, and disengaged it shouldn't.

I might not be right about the tranny/case set up, but I do know that if you want to check the lockouts, you will need to jack up the tire.

stupid question

Does an 83 F350 have open knuckles? I can't remember. If it does then you can just stick a screwdriver in there and turn the axle by hand to see if the hub locks or not. With the other one unlocked it should spin without the side in question locked and not spin when it's locked.

You DO NOT have to jack it up as long as you don't go deeper than the outside lock nut.

stupid question

good chob dude!
anti-sieze help on those screws, but you'll prob do the bearings again in 30k miles or if you get them underwater. Our bronco gets bearings cleaned and packed each spring bec. of the slush and salt here and the beach sand/moisture.
