Coolant leak from somewhere.

about a month ago, I was on the highway and doing my normal gauge sweep, and noticed my temp gauge acting funny, I kept glancing at it, and watched it PEG to "C", I immediately pulled off the highway and into a gas station, and it just PISSED out all my fluid, I found the problem to be a loose thermostat housing but even after installing a fresh thermostat and gasket and applying the proper tightening, it's not leaking that I can see, but somehow my fluid is slowly leaking out, I have to put a gallon or so into it every 3 days.

any ideas as to where it's going?

blown head gasket?
wore out water pump....just because the weep hole is dry at idle dont mean its not leaking at speed...
out the over flow due to a restriction in the system....have you checked the condition of the hoses?

The hoses are brand new, but no excuse to leave that un-attended, the water pump is brand new, but as I am seeing with the PO's antics of playing "Mr. Mechanic" it wouldn't surprise me, the head gaskets seem fine, there's no problems with the truck running, no water in my exhaust and no smoke, but then again..........I hope it's NOT.

The truck has never really given me serious problems, until the clutch slave cyl. went last week, but that's irrelevant.

Do you think it could be a bad rad cap? i'd rather it be that than anything, Payday is the 8th, i'll have to spend the extra few bucks and see if that helps.

Good places to check that might be hard to spot are the bypass hose at the thermostat housing. Check the hose that goes from the water pump to the heater core. That one seems to be one that people have problems with. It goes from the water pump to a metal tube that mounts to the alternator bracket and then to the heater core. If its leaking you can cut off the part where it couples to the metal tube and put a new piece of heater hose on with a hose clamp.

It's definitely older, never had this problem as a result of one before, but then again, there is always a first for everything, I KNOW the system holds pressure, whether it's the right pressure or too much I have no idea, but we will see.

Wildcat, I will check THAT tomorrow, thanks guys.

A gallon every 3 days isn't a slow leak to me.

Are you 100% sure the leak isn't visible?

I'd leave cardboard under the truck to see if you can find some dabs after letting it sit overnight after a drive.

You need to do a compression test to rule out a BHG. A coolant pressure test is a very good idea.
