330 questions

I have a '79 f350 ex-u-haul with the 330 w/ np435 tranny. Until yesterday i had never heard of a 330/332 FE. How reliable are thay, and what would yall use, a 351M or the 330? I have a 78 f150 with the modified and they will eventually become one truck. the M has about 65,000 on it and the 330 has less than 44,000. Any info would be helpful.

In this case, two negatives will not make a postive.

I'm sure you are aware of the problems with the 351M. A simple rebuild with the proper parts including a 400 crank thrown in will solve almost all the problems of a 351m. See the 335 forums for many examples.

The 330 U haul was a medium duty FT engine with FE parts--that's the short version. Due to the small bore, good luck getting anything other than modest power out of it.

So you are going to "upgrade" the '78 F150? What are your goals for the engine--performance or just go get firewood?

If you are going after the '78, just upgrade the 351M to a 400, and sell the Uhaul for more than you paid for it....

Both are reasonably reliable for their time, reliability now is a question mark due to the rebuilds.

well, im going to use the cab from the u-haul, it has just a little surface rust, very little at that. The 78 cab is not far from lookin like swiss cheese. Im not lookin for lots of power, im lookin for about 350hp, but im more wanting torque. Ive heard that the 351M wasnt so good, but im not sure of its problems, other than stroke? Well, it wouldnt be hard to sell it for more than i got it for, my aunt gave the truck to me. She bought the truck because then it had wooden sides on it and used it for hauling trash from their house remodel and use on the farm. After a while she said she got tired of looking at it in her yard. It dont look 2 bad without the rotting plywood on the sides. But not a bad "gift" really.

Last year of the 390 was '76, so neither would have had an FE stock, now that I think of it....not sure if the FT carried over. Which truck has a 351m, both?

I don't know how a 79 got a 330 in it, or how one would know for sure, but I can tell you that I had a 64 f600 that ran and delivered EVERYDAY, for 14 years straight. Finally, the clutch succeeded in pushing the crank out through the thrust bearing. When I took it out, it still had the factory exhaust locks on the bolts. It retired in 1999, after only 35 years of service. The new truck, 99 Sterling with 3126 Cat, exceeded the repair cost of the entire 14 year period of the 64 within 2 years.
If it was me, and I had a 330, I'd leave it alone...

U-haul special ordered those F350 chassis-cab setups, the 330 was definitely their choice, I guess because they already had loads of parts for maintenance.

The 330MD was "almost" an FE in certain ways because of the small-snout (cast?) crank, and other things.

yeah, its for sure a 330(says the tag in the engine bay) its not a bad engine. Less than 44,000 miles on it, it takes it a few seconds to fire over-damn mechanical fuel pump-but when its runnin, its so smooth.
WHat was the difference in the FE's and FT's?

WHat was the difference in the FE's and FT's?
Exhaust manifolds, heads, and intake, mostly bolt pattern on exh manifold, and the routing of the heat passage through the intake. There were diffferent size oil pump drives to, but the small one could be drilled out for the bigger one, and blocks would interchange.

How does your 330 mount? FT's usually use the timing cover.

That timing cover might be "worth something" if you're not going to use it - so that others can put an FE into a truck that used to have an FT.

How do you mean mount, like to the chassis?

Yes, as in motor mounts, that are usually on the side of the engine block, on the FTs are on the timing cover instead. Curious how that 330 is mounted to the chassis.
