seized motor

my 61 f-100 with a 223 seized up while i was cranking a few weeks ago... i was trying to crank it and heard a really light clink sound and it locked up so i thought the starter broke...and sure enough the bendix were snapped in half...i got it fixed and it's still seized...someone mentioned that maybe the timing chain broke and when i started to check that its really hard to get off...and i'd rather know how likely that was before i do that much work? can anyone help?

I would try to see if you can rotate the engine at all the OPPOSITE direction....pull the plugs when you do it too...plus then you can see what they look like as well...I would say if you can and you hear clinking up front...that it would be the chain...if you can, get something to listen to or have someone poke their head in the area of the timing chain cover and have them listen...since you are rotating by hand or with a breaker bar and socket you arent gonna hurt whoever helps listen down there...dont rotate it much...just to see if you can hear anything as you dont want any potential small parts to drop into the pan...but I would say its also the chain failed and wadded up on the bottom of the chain cover or its ultra loose and hung up between teeth on one of the gears there as well...either way, I would get ready to do a timing set replacement...not too expensive...and lotsa room to work in there as well...
