Hello. Have a '97 Ranger, 195k,2.3,5sp, XL single cab. This will be the 3rd summer it has this issue. When it's a hot day and the a/c is on, and when the engine fan clutch is engaged, engine stumbles at lo rpms and has bad accelleration. If you're at 50mph or so in 5th, it won't speed up at all unless you downshift to 4th. Engine just hesitates and stumbles. You can see it in the shifter too. If you're going 60 in 5th its ok. Better. In the winter months it isn't near as bad. Shop has done tune up when problem started but is no better. Actually runs alot better when engine is cold.Has to be warmed up before it gets weird. Check engine light comes/goes, but the issue does not. Recent timing belt change didn't help, wasn't expecting it to anyway. Local shop has a bad rep for changing parts that maybe didn't need to be changed, hesitant to go there. Hoping to fix myself. Thank yall for any ideas.
Sounds like you could have some pending codes stored.
An acting out/lazy O2 sensor, misfire, ect, will cause it to turn on & off.
Most autoparts stores will scan the computer at no cost, if the CEL is lit.
Some will do it if your having problems & have an intermittent CEL.
Post All of the code Numbers found.
If they won't scan it because the CEL isn't lit, just leave the fuel cap loose on the drive over there & that'll turn it on!!!!
