I recently purchased a ’71 Ford F100 with an I6-300. It has a Carter YF carb on it. I was poking around and found a disconnected pipe fitting by the choke index. This was drawing full engine vacuum at the fitting so I capped it off for now. Does anyone know where this originally hooked up to and is it normal for this to be drawing full vacuum? Also, there is a .005 gap in between the black choke index cap and the housing. Shouldn’t there be a gasket there? Is this a sealed system?
I had a picture to post with this message but the forum codes are not working. I created a new album for the “new” truck and put the pic of the YF there.
This could be where the choke warm up tube goes. The black housing should have a gasket. The fitting should pull vacuum, but it pulls it from the exhaust manifold. You should have a steel line hooked to that fitting and it runs down and hooks to a fitting on the exhaust manifold. When the engine is running, air sucked by the line is warmed through the exhaust manifold, and is pulled into the round black chamber where it warms the bi-metal spring and makes the automatic choke release.
Thanks, franklin2. I'll check out the manifold tomorrow for a connection somewhere and then go to the parts store and get a length of fuel line and fittings to rig it up. I will also chop up the kids cereal box after breakfast and make a gasket for the choke index housing gasket. Thanks, buddy!
OK. I have searched around on the exhaust manifold and can not find any fitting coming off of the manifold that looks like it would be for the choke. Does anyone know the location of this fitting? I see a small what looks to be a female hex on the fifth exhaust runner facing straight up that is about 1" deep (blind hole, not through) but when the engine is running I feel no pressure. There would be no way to attach a line to this anyway. I have uncapped the fitting at the carb for now to allow the ambient underhood temperature to be drawn into the choke. Is this OK or should I leave it capped off?
If you don't have any choke problems, I guess it doesn't matter. The fitting on the manifold probably rusted off. Sometimes they have a little fitting on the manifold with small holes around it. I have seen others with a deep hole, and a brass filter looking thing on the underside of the manifold. I am sure you could rig something if your choke is not pulling off quick enough.
