1990 ranger with 2.9 and standard trans, replaced starter 5 times ,last time replaced ring gear witch did not look bad ,and starter held up for 3 mos. does not act like its a electrical problem (bad wire or ground) woundering about articile i seen about some starter overengaging on the ring gear and a shim used to back it away some.

starter again

If you go to page 2 of the forum, and look for the post entitled "Starter or Flywheel problem?", by RedBilly, you'll find my long dissertation on that subject. As stated, the old starters for V8's & inline 6's DEFINITELY had issues, where some needed shimmed, & some didn't. It was no big deal really, except that remanufacturers didn't indicate which units DID OR DID NOT need shimmed, and which engine/transmission combos DID or DID NOT require shimming. I STILL don't know if the later starters for the V6's & 4 cylinders have this same issue. I would guess that they do, since usually, things tend to get MORE difficult & complicated, rather than LESS difficult & complicated, generally speaking, where auto mechanics, parts, & interchangeability are concerned. If you find any good data or literature, will you let us know?? If I find any, I too will pass it along. GOOD LUCK!
