REAREND ????
It might be helpful to know what kind, year, make or model rear end we're talking about. But given the nature of the number in question, it's likely a serial number of the axle assembly from the axle manufacturer, whoever that may be. If so, it's totally irrelevent to your truck.
NumberDummy is his userid.. ex Ford Parts master... and still master of the numbers..
How he finds obscure parts at still selling vendors amazes me..
edit the topic title to be "Rear End ID number" and I'm sure he will be along shortly... he won't be able to help himself!..

This info is of no help, since I have no idea what the rear axle is.
Is it in a vehicle? If so, what model and year.
Laying loose? How many wheel studs on the axle? How many bolts on the inspection cover (if it has one)?
It's very difficult to answer a question like this without the pertinent details.

its came in my 51 .i'm restoring it. this number is on the front were the driveshaft hooks up.it is only like a inch long. the back of the rearend is solid no bolts.the motor and trans. came from a 65 mustang. thinking maybe the rearend did too. not for sure. It has a 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern.
I hate to steal your post, but I have the same question. Rear tag says
S614B
373 88 7E01
Its a 97 Explorer and I know what the 373 88 means, wondering if it has a limited slip or not? Appreciate any help you can provide, Thanks

You do not have an 8" rear axle, because none have a 5.50" bolt circle pattern. All have a 4.50" bolt circle pattern reflecting usage in Mustang/Falcon/Fairlane/Torino/Comet/Granada/Maverick and etc. passenger cars.
The Ford 9" as installed in 1957/79 F100's, some 1980/83 F100's, 1975/86 F150's, 1966/86 Bronco's, 1969/86 Econolines has a 5.50" bolt circle pattern.
Look on the carrier for a cast ID number, post what it is. The Ford AXLE ID tag would be (if it's still there) at 5 o'clock under one of the bolts that holds the carrier to the housing.

If with Limited Slip, the tag would have had an L between 3 & 7, like this: 3L73.
1957/67 F100 9" rear axles are essentially the same. There are two different types used 1968/72. One is essentially the same as 1957/67.
One is not, as it's a H/D unit with a 9 3/8" ring gear, only five internal parts are the same as a 9 inch.
1973/79: The F100/150 9's axle housing is wider, since these trucks have wider rear frame rails (37 1/2" vs 33 1/2") than previous years.
