What pre filter add-on?

Been looking over some Racor filters to mount before the frame fuel pump.

Which one of these will work and what micron filter?

(these are list price, not catalog price)

Found this too...bottom left

What are you trying to do Charlie? Are you deleting the factory unit?

I was gonna do the tank mod and put in a pre-filter to try and get more life out of the stock pump by reducing any grit 'n stuff.

check out some of the stuff at thedieselstore.com prices are much more reasonable and if you are just wanting to catch the heavy grit before it gets to the fuel bowl then I would suggest either a 150 or 30 micron filter

Thanks for that, guys. Prices look better.

One thing I was wondering was what size micron filter to use that would not be restrictive but catch as much of the stuff as possible.

What's a MICRON?

...and 30 micron is a good filter size?

Does it need a heater? I noticed both the Racor and Stanadyne offer 12-24v heaters.

Again, thanks a lot guys. I know us newbies keep asking the same 'ol questions. That's what's so great about this site. It's a teaching place.

For what it is worth, I use a $2 see through Fram filter in front of my pump just to catch debris and prolong pump life. I need this because I have a sump that would feed unfiltered fuel directly to the pump from the bottom of the tank. I still use the stock filter for filtration and water separation.

Is that one of those glass tube thingys? I was wondering about those but thought they might be too restrictive.

I've been reading and searching and found this

Racor Diesel Spin-On Series Filters / Water Separators

I guess a heater isn't necessary unless you are in cold weather...trouble is, you never know when you that might be.

as you stated, you will need to be the judge of whether or not you need a fuel heater, it was consistently before 20* this winter here and I never had any trouble firing the old girl up, and you can use fuel additives to lower the gelling point if needed,
a micron is one thousandth of a milimeter, according to wiki the human hair is about 100 microns and the red blood cell is 8 microns as a comparison, personally, I use a 3-stage filtration that goes from 150 to 30 to 2 microns, but since you are just using it as a supplement to your current system, the 150 should work just fine for you to grab the larger debris

Great. I think I'll go down and take a look at the different filter and see what will fit.

How did you make out with the pre pump filter? I have a Racor with a water sensor and am planning on adding it to my system also. I've read enough on here about damage to injectors from bad fuel that I think it's a good idea to get a warning when the water is back near the tank instead on in the fuel bowl on the engine. Any pictures?

I put on a racor 30 micron and did the fuel system mod to eliminate any air leaks and added the RiffRaff FRX.

There's no air in the racor sight bowl and the systems seems quieter. After adding a pt of 2 cycle oil to my 35 gal tank, it's gotten quieter.

Ready to start thinking about a 4" exhaust system.

i dont understand the logic so ill ask. why not just put in a 2 micron and eliminate the other 2?

if it were me, I would leave the factory filter unless I put a filter post fuel pump. The post pump would catch any particulate if the fuel pump starts to malfunction.

you want a 20 or 30 micron with water separator before the pump to protect it yet not make it work so hard to pull fuel....you a need 2 or 3 micron after the pump to protect the injectors just in case the pump chits out parts...you dont need the fuel heater if you care take of your fuel...my PSD and most tractor trailers up here dont have any fuel heaters at all...just so you know..600 HP has been done though a bowl..i deleted my bowl cause the cold we get and orings just dont work well together...
