Im want to convert my 2wd to a 4wd. Is this worth doing?
I consider myself a proficient pseudo-mechanic....is it worth doing myself or paying a shop to do it? What shops do you recommend if that is the case?
Cost????
First off, you will need to purchase a 4x4 donor truck (1980 - 1996), and to make the swap easier, look for one with the same wheelbase and tranny as yours. You will need the front TTB setup off the 4x4 (if you installed the lift on your truck, the 4x4 one is exactly the same only it has a differential and shafts) Remove your 2wd TTB setup and just install the 4x4 one off the donor truck. Ford kept the dimensions the same so it'll fit perfectly. The hardest part will be the tcase, the tailpiece off your tranny has to be removed and replaced with the one from a 4x4 version of the tranny you have.
The IFS 4x4 front end from an 80 - 96 F-150 bolts up fine...
I just finished mine and am going to post some pics of the swap...
The transfer case is what gets tricky!!! I also swaped my E4OD to an C6.... The bolt holes were already there also....
