Ok im gonna call on all E4OD fans and experts here. I have a 91 F-150 2wd with E4OD. The trans has about just under 100,000 on it, it's seen some light towing maybe a bed load of mulch every now and then. The trans has been great until recent where if im at a low rpm and give it throttle the trans will start clicking, I haven't noticed it idling higher than normal or longer response except maybe in changing into OD, it wont do it in park or neutral or when backing up. OD on or off don't matter hot or cold rain or shine. But the weird thing is if i punch it to get moving PDQ it moves but doesn't make the noise. The fluid is good not burnt, i just put a thing of Lucas trans treatment in there and no difference. So i don't know if it's just on it's way out finally or if it's something i can fix. No clue.
Are you sure it's the trans? I'd start off checking the U-joints and carrier (center support bearing) Block the tires and put the trans in neutral to check. Engine does not need to be running.
Ok so there is one u-joint bad i couldn't find it till i jacked the back wheels off the ground its the one right after the carrier. i even re checked it when i put it back on the ground and it was back to being tight. I'll change that and see but when i had it jacked up i had it running about 1500 rpms and it still sounded like the noise was coming from the trans. but not all bad i found out i needed to adjust my rear brakes cause i'd have it in gear and i'd have the brake as far as it would go and the rear wheels wouldn't stop
