I have a set of '79 F150 Camper Special Axles that I am installing in my 1994 S10 (I know I know). The front is a Dana 44 High Pinion and the rear is a 31 spline 9 inch.
I found a guy selling a used Detroit locker with 4.33 gears for a good deal. He is selling the entire third member for $300.
I am having trouble finding 4.33s for a Dana 44 HP (if they even make them).
I know on a Dana 44, there is a carrier break between the 3.73 / 3.92 ratios. If I'm going from a ratio on one side of that break to the other, a new carrier will be required.
Question being, if I cannot get 4.33s for the front; can I have 4.27s in the front and the 4.33s in the rear? Only would be in 4wd when wheeling.
I've never heard of either of those gear sets for either axle. But yes, you need to run the same ratio unless your a mud racer and can easily get the extra wheel speed to prevent binding...or if you're gonna run different sized tires to maintain the proper effective ratio. So keep looking for another locker.
