I have a 2002 F-250 4x4 Diesel 7.3. just went through and changed both front hubs and while doing so noticed this. This is the back side of the front passanger wheel the bolts in the picture are the 2 of the 4 bolts that hold the hubs. The plastic ring is just kinda sitting there not attached to anything aymore, its like this on both sides. Assuming bearings or something. If anyone could let me know it would be appreciated also what kinda job this would be to do it myself, any special tools ect... Thanks in advance.
Ok couldn't get pictures to upload on thread for some reason so they are on my profile under the work album....
I think that you need to have over 25 posts as a newbie to be able to use that and other features of FTE.
By the way welcome to FTE!
Those are the dust shields that come off the rubber seals. Most, if not all come apart almost right away and are not that important. A regular posting on here asking what it is going on with those. You have to take off the hub and knuckle assembly to change those and are usually left until you do the ball joints.
That said if you do your own maint you will find this link most helpfull. Welcome to guzzle's Ford PSD Web Pages
Enjoy FTE, and watch out, the longer you spend on here the more money you want to spend on upgrades.
x2. The dust seals tend to come apart pretty quickly, although they are now supposedly re-designed to hold together longer. Not too long ago I tore the front end apart and put in new hub assemblies, ball joints, seals and tie rods. I replaced them then. You risk too much by disturbing all the seals to make this the only reason you do it. IIRC they are around $20 a seal plus the labor involved (whether you pay $$$$ to have it done or spend the day yourself) is nowhere near worth it for just the dust seals. My truck had over 180K when I went in there (and my dust seals had been dangling for as long as I have owned it) and there was hardly anything in the axle housing (I off-road a lot).
