While charging my battery, I was checking the vacuum lines for the smog crap, on the passenger side.
They were so #@#$$^# brittle that a few of them snapped in several pieces.
Has anyone ever changed these hard plastic lines to rubber or any other type of material?
Is there any place other than junk yards that have these darn things on stock? Ford has apperently stopped making them, do to exactly what my problem is
I have seen several auto parts places that deal in performance stuff have complete vacuum hose kits so you can replace them all it one shot. Several are OEM style and other are high heat/fuel resistant colors, like say Ford Blue!
I am considering swapping all of my vacuum lines over to new blue ones, since right now it is a vacuum nightmare and they need to be cleaned. replaced and marked for location.
The kit I looked at getting was about $40 +/- , and came with all the diameters I should need in various lengths.
Hey that happened to me I went to NAPA and i got a piece of fuel line with the same internal diameter and it works fine. My problem was that my vents weren't working, the air was only comming out the defrost. So, now it works great and it cost like 50 cents for a couple of feet. Really easy.
Thank you all, so far, for the input.
Although, I recently found out a little info about the stock vacuum lines that are used for the smog crap. By going to the black ruber hoses or fuel line type for these vacuum lines the smog check people may not pass the check. Apperently these vacuum lines are color coded for a reason, mainly to help the smog check person identify everything is corect.
Color coded?
Must be a newer model year thing. On my 85 Bronco 302, 87 F-150 300, and 86 Bronco, they have been all black. No colors anywhere. I have yet to have any inspection problems, so it must be for newer models. That or the guys inspecting here do not know any better................
That is why I suggested the complete kit. Better looks and longer lasting supposedly.
Well mine is a '90. I, also, used to have an '89 (with 5.0(302) motor) that had the same type of color coded vacuum lines that my '90 has. A lot of the parts stores near my home are very limited on what parts that I'm looking for. Even the closest Ford dealer parts counter is pretty well limited, or they just don't know what they are doing.
I know what you mean about better looks, though. Since I have Edelbrock intake manifolds and throttle body and the K & N filter system on mine. I've had people do double takes and were impressed.
I know this sounds simple, but would there be a reason why some of the lines are hard plastic and others rubber? I'm currently rebuilding the 302 from my '82 and all the vacuum lines are being replaced...the lines are as fragile as dry pine needles.
I'm not trying for a perfect rebuild, but would like to replace the lines with the appropriate color..red, green, yellow (versus some sort of paint/tape routine). Any on-line supplier of hoses with color? And if I was replacing with the hard plastic, any supplier out there?
I am also interested (very, actually) in finding a complete vacuum line kit. I have stopped off at a local car parts place or two during the last year or so. All I have found where bulk reels of black rubber hoses (better than nothing, of course, but am hoping I can find better).
I would LOVE to find a complete kit that has ALL the vacuum lines, fittings, etc in it and ready to put on. I'd rather pay a little extra money and get it all in one shot, then manually replace each line with generic/bulk hose and possibly fight a dozen little ends/fittings throughout. Maybe I'm missing something, here (been known to happen before )
BTW - Those color coded hard plastic vacuum lines are no longer made. Mainly because of the problems they promote, becoming so darn brittle and brakes just by looking at them. They only place that I have been able to find replacement lines is from they wrecking yards. other than that the black rubber lines should work fine.
I haven't found a complete vac line set, but there are several on-line places that offer multi-color hoses (green, blue, yellow) so I at least I'll have the correct color coding. No longer have emissions testing in Minnesota but the color coding will help keep things straight under the hood and make the engine look interesting.
