After having the trans rebuilt and putting it back in, filling it full of atf, reverse and 2nd gear worked and that was it. Pulled trans again took it back to the guy who rebuilt it, he said the springs were too short so he made them longer. Got the trans back put it back in, same thing, reverse and 2nd gear work and thats it. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Sorry this took a while for a reply.
"Springs were to short so he made them longer". Gonna need either a visual aid or more to work with. What is he referring to?
As much as I hate to be harsh on another tech or mechanic...
Those are one type of return spring used in the clutch packs. (one type is like a reverse beveled disc that flexes--the other type uses small springs such as pictured)
Others will chime in with ideas, but my own limited time spent with transmissions? I'd suspect the rebuild was lacking part of the clutch pack--so he made the springs 'longer' to compensate for the missing steel discs/clutch discs.
There is no way I'm aware of to make those springs "Longer" and get away with it. Unless he swapped out the springs for new springs of a longer type--even that sounds just wrong and won't work correctly.
