tall skinny tire options for 1979 f350 4x4?
Just bought a truck and it will likely need new tires soon. It currently has 33x12.50 tires on it, but I would like to go taller/skinnier. I am thinking a nice e-rated radial tire, anyone running such a thing? I'm more interested in a A/T pattern over a M/T.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I like the Q78-16 TSL Swamper. Its a 35.5" tall 9" wide tire. Looks sweet! Especially on rallye silver stock steelies these trucks came with!
I think they are a great looking, utilitarian style tire! I like where your going with the tall skinny idea. Imagine if you found a set of stock rims with the dog dish hub caps! That would be sexy...

255/85R16's come in an 8 ply rating and are and tha Cooper Discoverer S/T is an agressive A/T. I think the hold about 3000 pounds per tire at 65psi.
As stated below, these are not exactly what you were looking for, but are a viable option. I have run them before and they worked well. They do look real skinny now that I have run wider tires on other rigs.

These may not be quite what you are looking for, but the tires I have on my rig (73 F250) are the Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10. they come in just about every size and load range imaginable, (I'm running a LT245/75R16 on my rig) I believe the ones I got a load range E also. I haven't been able to drive my truck much since I got them, but consumer reports rated them in their top five, and all the reviewers on discount tire's website seem to like them. http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/tires/hankook/product/submitProductSize.do?r=WASINT|pc|98136&pc=10837

Thanks for the ideas, I will investigate them further.
Some more details for my somewhat vague question. My type of driving involves a lot of miles, and while my last truck probably saw over 50k miles in 4wd it was mild stuff. I don't go out looking for mudholes.
I'm planning to do a diesel conversion on the truck and the sweet spot is 1800rpm. By going to a taller tire I might be able to avoid changing out the gear ratios in the axles (currently 4.10). I am thinking something in the area of 35s.
I want tall tires to help with gearing, and I would like skinny radials to decrease rolling resistance and increase wear characteristics. The truck will need tires sooner rather than later, so If I can't find something that fits these needs then I will go for tall/skinny/bias tires until I can do the axle gear change.
I guess I am thinking a 35" tall tire, 10" wide.

Update:
Found a Toyo "Open Country AT" in 285/75R17 that is a radial. On their website they say that they are 34x11.5, but I have a report that they are actually 10.5" wide. Anyone seen these?
The Michelin XZL in 9.00x16 might be another I would consider if I could find a source. They are something like 36x10, but apparently very difficult to find and limited to 62mph. Anyone know a source for these?

I am going to run the Goodyear Hummer tires on my truck. They are 36x12.50.16.5 or the new style is 37x12.50x16.5

I have ran these as a winter tire on my 78. They are a good looking tire. They would be right in the range you need for a 4bt with 4.10s. The wheel I used was stock steels of a 1995 f250. They are cheap and found everywhere! Im am not sure to the backspacing but they were a 16x6. They look really bitchin' on the tall workhorses like highboys and your lowboy 350 with the rims painted rallye silver. Hope this helps! I couldnt find any of my truck with them on but when I do I will post em.
