New member looking for info.1971 F100 Shortbed. I found this on craigslist and going to see it tomorrow. The truck has inline 6cyl and three on column. The owner states it will turn over but won't start and has surface rust but no holes rusted through. He also states it only has 47,000 miles with inspection slips to show this. He is asking 995.00 . Should I pay this or try lower. This seems like an OK truck http://greensboro.craigslist.org/cto/1813229483.html
Depends on the actual condition of the truck. Body wise that photo makes it look like most other trucks of that age in that condition. No other photos to look at, so I don't know, really. As far as not starting, it couild be a whole list, and allot fo them easy stuff. Let us know whats going on.
My opinion would be, depending on teh condition of it, offer $500 to $700. I'm not out to rip people off, but if it doesn't run, well that's money I have to put into it, and thats how I figure the price drop.
That is what I was thinking. I was going to bring 600 and offer 500. If he won't come off of it, I will move on. I am finding it hard to resist, I have wanted a 71-72 for many years with a three on column as I learned to drive with one. So this truck is pulling me in.
Well I got it for a deal, I think. $400.00, The truck does have some rust in the right side of the bed and along the bed seams, The hood had a severe case of rust but I found one for the truck rust free. The motor and interior is spotless this truck truely only has 48816 miles. He has the state inspection slips in the glove box. I was really happy to see the floor pans were not rusted out. I will be picking it up this weekend, as I will have to trailer it. This has been a long time coming as I have been looking for the right truck for 6 years.
I bet it'll look pretty good with a good scrubbing to get all that crap off of it. If it's not running simply due to sitting, install a good battery, check for spark and clean and adjust the points, put some fresh gas in it and it'll probably fire right up...takes a lot to kill these old trucks!

Do the state inspection slips date back to 1971? If not...
The odometers of trucks of this vintage read to 99,999.9 miles then return to ZERO. This means that the truck could have 48,816, 148,816, 248,816 miles, or?
Used car dealers were in-famous for (illegally) rolling back odometers.
If you don't have documentation from the day it was first sold new to the original purchaser, and was still owned by said purchaser when you bought it, there is no way to verify if the miles shown on the odometer are correct.
A 39 year old truck that shows 48,816 miles, averages out to less than 1500 miles per year. Is this plausible? Prolly not.
The miles are in fact as stated. The slips (dating back to 1971)are in my hands right now going through the items that came with the truck. The first owner was killed in a wreck and his brother kept the truck but rarely drove it. He later sold it to his neighbor, the man I purchased it from and he also never drove it only to haul something from time to time. He finally parked it 3-4 years ago and put it up for sale this week. The poor truck has done lots of sitting. The condition of things like the original spare tire, the crispness of the doors when they shutthe condition of the interior, and the fact it still has a lot of the OEM items in place and unused or lost, is all further evidence of the miles being accurate. It was very unusual to me to find the mileage as such, but it checks out.
go get this truck I emailed him day before yesterday when I first saw it logged on here the day after and seen you talking about it, im so pissed with you lol but i found another one just not that lightly used

Sorry I beat you to it. It is turning out to be an adventure with this truck. The motor is now running but I will have to pull the column to get it squared away. It will only go from first to neutral and some times go into reverse. Forget about second and third. Also this truck will have to have a complete brake system replacement. I had no peddle when I picked it up. Seen the bottle of fluid in the floorboard and thought maybe a leak and will only need to add and locate later. No sir. This this has rust and water throughout the whole brake system. there was almost 1/2 an inch of rust in the master cylinder. This will be a weekend project for my Father and I.
