Please Help Diagnose my Cooling problem

Hello, i have a 1999 Ford E150 4.2 V.6. When driving the van after fifteen minutes or so the dash temperature guage shoots from middle to high. The van i not overheating but the dash temp light comes on and the temp guage jumps to hot acting as if there was a dead short somewhere. Where does the temperature guage gets its signal from? Thermostat housing? Whats the correct technical term for that guage switch? Does anyone have a schematic of the motor layout i can take a look at?

Please help

thanks

I've got a similar problem. Also my lighting flickers constantly. I'm wondering if I have regulator/gen problems that is causing reference voltage problems to the sensors and PCM? I'll post what I find.

I'd replace the thermostat just to be safe and then find someone with an advanced scan gauge to check the reference temp from the temp sensor. You could have a bad sensor as well.

Let us know about the charging system check. That used to happen frequently with bad alternators in older vehicles, but I haven't encountered it in a newer one.
