Question Headlight conversion

Hey guys, I've discovered I have a headlight out and was thinking of doing some upgrade work while I was swapping bulbs. I'm curious if any of you have recommendations / stories to share. The addition of relays sounds wise - maybe even more simplistic without a relay for high beams if I go with HID's. I was also toying with the idea of wiring the relay to the fuse box so that the lights are always on when the ignition key is on...(I've run the battery dead once and wish not to do that again). What do you guys think?

Assuming you have an engine with an electric choke here is an idea for you to think on. You can essentially have daytime running lights that will not turn on at all unless the engine is running. Even with just the key on the headlights will not light if you use the same circuit that powers the electric choke. Just wire into it with a relay to power up the 12V circuit for the headlights and they will only work if the engine is running. This will keep someone from running a battery down while during a slow start condition as well. Does anyone really use headlights when starting? Now I know you are thinking that evrything turns off when you turn the key to the start position. Well, you are correct, but what immediatlely happens when you realease the key? Everything is back on again. So avoid any headlights on during cranking an engine over and during as many tries as it may take until you really need those headlights. This is how your electric choke operates. Of course you may want an override circuit so the lights will work in all conditions when needed.
