The fuel pump on my '89 doesn't come on all the time when turning on the ignition.....it won't self test. I will have to switch it on and off until it will decide to work. But once the pump is working, it stays working.
I also got a trouble code 96 on my scantool - Fuel pump secondary circuit fault/ high speed fuel relay open. Could this be the culprit? Is there a relay I need to check?
I got about 8 different codes from my scantool, but I'll try and tackle the fuel pump problem first.
Sounds like a bad EEC Power Relay or Ignition Switch.
Check to see if the brown relay is clicking when you turn the key on and off.
Could also be bad wiring under the Relay.
I bought the truck used back in November and somebody before me installed an in-line pump in the frame rail instead of replacing the one in the tank.
Isn't this factory? I had the same problem with the inline, high-pressure pump on the frame rail. Try tapping it with a hammer when someone else turns the key. Mine did the same thing and tapping it with a hammer would get the pump spinning. $100 for a new one from Advance.
But mine's an '88/six cylinder. I don't know for sure if you have a high pressure pump low pressure, in-tank pump(s) on your '89 V8.
Thanks for the replies. Something else I think I forgot to mention. Some previous owner installed a separate power switch for the fuel pump on the instrument panel. The switch needs to be on for the pump to work. Would this be a cheap fix to remedy a faulty ignition switch? I can't think of why this was done.
Roader, is your in-line pump located inside the driver side frame rail right before the the front wheel? If so, maybe it is a factory thing. I was thinking it was an add-on.

Yes, that's exactly where it is. Factory harness with two wires, one small female spade and one bigger female spade - I don't remember the colors - so the to connections couldn't be mixed up. A sheet metal clamshell around the pump with (I think) three screws holding it to the frame. Some neoprene cushioning material between the clamshell and the pump.
Okay, I'll look into the pump being bad. Maybe that's why I got a DTC 96 on my code scanner. That code says - "Fuel pump secondary circuit fault/ high speed fuel pump relay open".......I'll also check the fuel pump relays. Does anyone know where the relays are located?
You got the DTC 96 because the computer no longer controls the fuel pump with the fuel pump relay. The switch on the dash does.
The relays were on the drivers inter fender.
I wasn't expecting the relays to be missing, I am almost certain there is an empty space there where they should be, because that's the location for the EEC computer link, and I was using it yesterday. The truck is at my other residence right now so I can't check it to be sure, I will sometime mid-week.
Are there any other fuel related relays? Because I do hear a click when the ignition is turned on. How hard of a job will it be too install new relays if the truck needs them to run properly?
