I am replacing a water pump on a 1985 351w block, when pulling the pump off I noticed it had been replaced before by the yellow marking on the backing plate, the pump itself was off a 77 351w. I bought a replacement for a 1985 351w and have come across an issue. On of the bolt holes is raised higher on the 77 pump and on the 85 one it is not. Heres a picture of the area I am talking about. My question is, will this pump work? I would think the bolt will be too long for the one hole. Anyone come across this before?
I pulled a dumb move and didnt pay attention to where my bolts came out of. Now I cant figure it out. Anyone know where to find a diagram showing correct installation? Or does anyone know?
There are a few different sizes, and the best thing to do is to try them at different holes and make sure they all grab sufficient threads. There are a couple that double as mounting studs for the accessory brackets, and you will have to look at them to see where they need the support.
Lay it out, mock it up, and move them around if at first they don't fit.
As I recall from my 289 days, just pushing them into the holes will give you the fitment--some do not engage, some engage too soon. Move them around, presto.
Did the same thing myself, mixing the little beggers up....
Ok I figured it out. Now my issue is tightening up the alternator and power steering pump, so the belts are tight and turn when I turn the fan. I got them as tight as I can, but when I turn the fan they just slip instead of grab.
