What effect would gutting both cats on an 87 302 have on the O2 sensor? Would it screw up the reading to the ECU. Doesn't look like it would matter since its in front of the cats.
A friend of mine has a 92 351EFI. He wanted to run dual exhaust, so he cut the pipes just behind the O2 sensor(before the pipes join). He then ran straight pipes from there. I'm not sure what he did about the air tube to the cats though. If you just want to gut your cats & not remove them, this shouldn't concern you anyway. I'm not saying this is advisable. I really don't know, but my friend hasn't had any problems.
Gutting the cats will not have an effect on the 02 sensor as the sensor is ahead of both catalytic converters. Gutting them will however affect your emissions, so if you have to have any type of emission inspections where you live, don't bother as you will find yourself replacing them.
Why don't you just replace the two cats with 1 high flow cat? That will give you the performance gains you want, better sound, and will all allow us to beathe a little easier. This is the same kind of thing as "trend lighty". We don't want people to ruin 4 wheeling trails and ruin it for the rest of us when the trails close. Same thing, we don't want people running open exhaust and poluting the air and making the government clamp down on us so hard with laws and regulations. Summit racing has some nice Catco cats, I got a universal cat for 80 bucks. I ran w/o cats for a week to see what it was like, put the one catco cat on and it didn't hurt the power and it makes it sound a little better.
