Hard to say how long a compressor will last. I've seen them granade at 10k miles or less and then some go over 200k. A lot depends on proper refrigerant charge and oil. Compressors do not like low refrigerant as the oil will not circulate properly. Then again, overcharging will slug it and cause early failure.
If I was looking at a JY compressor I would want to pull it from the vehicle after I had pulled the orifice tube out and checked for metal debri and the condition of the oil. That would be a fairly good indicator of condition. I am running one now in my '92 that has given me good service so you can find them. Some JY's will give a warranty but it sure is a lot of work and expense to install it only to find out it is defective.
