I did that and built a harness using relays to take power directly from the battery (using a remote fuse box) using larger wire for less voltage drop than the undersized factory harness. Between the two, my headlights are as bright as my wife's new Honda Pilot.

When is the last time you changed light bulbs? They do wear out over time and put out less light.
Also, is your lense cover cloudy? You can make it clear again very easily with a lens buff kit from any auto store. I did this last spring and it makes a difference.
My F250 vs my old (2008) F150 is night and day. The F250 outshines it by far. Talk about going blind, try driving my Fusion at night if you don't know the road...
The optometrist should be able to help you out though...
