Someone else will come along and post a link to the "what to look for when buying" thread. I know it's here somewhere, but I can't find it for some reason.
But more importantly what thing should he look for on these 6.0's? Is the anything particular to be aware of?
The most important thing to be aware of in my opinion, is that these are expensive to own and repair. And with that many miles on the clock you have to be prepared for some repairs. Hpop, injectors, turbo, oil and EGR coolers, maybe head gaskets. Any one of those things will be more than $1,000 to repair, maybe a lot more, and you can bet on needing more than one of those items in the near future.
As long as you go in aware of the cost, with the wallet to handle it, no problem. I would want about $5k in reserve for the expected.
My buddy wants a powerstroke pretty bad. He has his eyes on a 2004 6.0L crew cab 4X4. 160,000 miles on the ticker for $16,000.
Hows the price sound? But more importantly what thing should he look for on these 6.0's? Is the anything particular to be aware of?
Thanks for any advice youy may have.
Pete
what kind of package is on it? I got my 04 with 80k on the odo. for 18,500 but its a lariat with all the bells and whistles. sun roof, fx4. etc. 16,000 would seem a little high to me with those miles.
Also, this is where i got my truck, might give it a look, some good deals come through here every now and then, and to elaborate a little on my above post, I bought the truck over a year ago and it was still under factory warranty. Has a little rust showing on the passenger side wheelwell.
He just called and told me this and I don't know much more at this time. He is turned off a little on it because it's a longbed.
I told him to drive it and see how he likes it, but not to do anything more than that at this time. There's plenty of them out there to choose from. It just takes time and patience.
Thanks for all the info guys. I have a lot to read and won't have much time till the weekend. I'm much more familiar with the 7.3's. The 6.0 is a foreign motor to me.
So it sound like around 300k miles these trucks begin to need some costly repairs? I know right at 180k or so on the 7.3's the injector o-rings start to go. But it all depends on how well the truck was maintained by the previous owner(s).
I know this is a biased question but I'll ask anyway. Would he be better off trying to find a '02- '03 7.3 instead of a 6.0? Is the 6.0 as reliable as the 7.3? I know I would be more knowledgable on the 7.3 when it comes to helping him out.

You might be better off with a 160k 7.3 than a 160k 6.0. Especially in an '03 or '04. An '03 is very close to the exact same truck, and was made with either a 7.3 or 6.0. But even there, the 6.0 has the Torqshift, which is far better than the 4R100. But I think I would give the edge to the 7.3.
So for me, a 6.0 doesn't become interesting until at least the '05, and preferably the '06-'07. These will have the improved interior, improved front 4WD suspension, bigger brakes, bigger wheels. And a lower mileage one would have some of the 5yr/100k engine warranty remaining. But of course it will cost more too.
If you take the $16k for that '04, and add the $5k that I predict will be needed for repairs, you might well get into an '06-'07 for the same money.
There are good '03's and '04's out there. So I don't mean to slight anyone. But the odds are just not as good.

you can make the 6.0 pretty bulletproof if you take the time to read up and learn the things that they have problems with, if you delete your egr valve or clean it with every other oil change, and run a good oil like 5w40 syn. keep your filters changed with oem brand filters, put a coolant filter on the truck, run a good fuel additive, such as diesel clean, and basically just take care of your truck and put some money back like stated above for expected repairs with that higher milage truck and youll be ok.

Thanks. I definately understand where your coming from. I believe with his budget an '05 will be out of the question. And if he needs to assume 5k will need to go into this 6.0 in the near future, then it proably isn't the best option either. He will not be towing any or very little with it too so the better tranny isn't something he has to have but would obviously be nice to have.
I guess my thought is the 7.3 has proven itself to be able to achieve quite high mileage without investing 5k once it turns over 150K. But i'm not saying the 7.3's are maintenance free by any means as you all know. The downfall on the 7.3 in my eyes is that it is an older design and is louder and less technologically advanced than the 6.0. But that can be a benefit too when it comes to maintenance maybe.
My truck has 225k on it and runs like a champ. Last summer (at 200,000) I rebuilt my injectors (made them bigger too), replaced my manifold bolts, glow plugs and harnesses, and added a PHP chip for around two thousand.
What is considered "high mileage" for the 6.0's? Are there any out there with 500k on them? What kind of fuel mileage can someone expect to get with the 6.0?

So basically like the 7.3 with a few differences. Bascially take care of it and it will take care of you.
Pardon my stupidity please. What's an oasis report?
an oasis report is a report you can get from the dealership or possibly from someone on here that has access if your real nice and sweet talk them lol, anyways it shows everytime that truck has been into the dealership and what work was done on it for the life of the truck, that way you will know how many turbos or egr related problems it has had, youll want a fairly clean report, i mean 1 turbo replacement or 1 or 2 egr related problems is probably ok, but if you got 4 pages of problems you better just walk away from that junker lol
