spark plug blowout

Hi All,

I started my '99 F150 last night, heard a loud pop, then what sounded like a huge exhaust leak. My mechanic told me that I blew a spark plug right out of the cylinder head! He said the only option is a helicoil kit. If that doesn't work, I would need a new head with serious labor involved to be done by dealer only. Does anyone know of any other options or is that it. Comments in general? Thanks guys.

Lou

Common problem on these engines, but for the most part it is caused my a lack of knowledge when putting spark plugs in, or just carelessness. If you put spark plugs in the right way and thread them properly, this shouldnt be a problem. Anyways, replacing the head is obviously the best way to fix it. But since its so expensive and time consuming, the helicoil kit will work just fine. Ive heard of many people using them on these trucks, and havent had a problem since. The helicoil kit is the way to go to spend less money. Again replacing the head is the only 100% fix.

Thank you for the info. Helicoil worked! Massive money saved ('till the next issue).

I've had the truck since 2000 and it had 35000 mi on it. I've never touched the plugs. Don't know if the previous owner did. Never been touched while in my posession. Good luck with the hand and have fun at physical therapy.
