So, if we put two and two together we come up with twotwo.
Actually looking at the plug, it connects up with the two prongs on the distributor that are running horizontal to each other. You can see the tongue on the plug that fits into the slot in the distributor and the tabs on the distributor for the clip on the connector.
The plug wires are red and green so I'm 98% certain the the red is ignition and the green is the tach.
So on your distributor, the right horizontal tab is for ignition and the left horizontal tab is for the tach.
After installing the HEI distributor in place of the old distributor, connect the spark plug wires to the cap (be sure to maintain the correct firing order sequence). Install the ignition coil in the distributor cap. The three wire connector from the base of the distributor plugs into the coil leads in the cap. The will be two remaining connectors in the cap. The red wire connects to a 12-volt, keyed switch power source (sometimes labeled "BAT") and the yellow lead is for a tach signal (if needed). Next, remove the resistor wire or ballast resistor used to reduce power to the original ignition coil. It must be removed because the HEI distributor requires a full 12 volts of electricity to properly operate or damage to the control module will result.
Hey guys n gals, I kinda started this in another post (engine progress and pics) but I would like to know how to go about hooking up the HEI dist to the motor once I'm done putting it together. I have installed a new wiring harness a couple months ago and have to old points type dist in the truck now, so all I have is the coil wire running to the coil. Is/what else would I need to get it going or should I just go ahead and put a points style dist in the new motor.
I am sure that he had it fixed and was driving the truck while the debate and advice continued.....I got your back...Tardster...BTW what does Tardster mean?

It's a Swahili expression that very loosly translated means "Deck with 49 cards."

LMAO.... thats great Julie... Actually I use to have a cat (Miss Kitty) and when she was young she would do stupid crazy stuff. When she got going all crazy n stuff I would say she was "tarding" so when I got hooked up on the internet it was automatic when yahoo asked me for a username I put Tardster in and Ive been Tardster since...

order has been placed for the plug. I also picked up the last couple little tid bits I needed to finish off the motor. Wednesday I will be picking up a sandblaster from Harbor Freight, I hope it works at least long enuff to clean up the frame n stuff. I plan on using the spray on bed liner for the frame and floor boards of the cab. I figure that will protect that stuff pretty good...
Have you considered undercoating? I did that and it works great. If Ihave to do work on it or weld something, I can take it off easily and spot spray it back on.

I've never had good luck with undercoating. It always seems to get brittle and flake off, its probably from the winters we have here. I figure if you can almost sand down a concrete block on that bed liner stuff, it should hold up to the rocks and bad weather/winters.
I have been thinking about getting that one. Any problems? And did you use an MSD coil and control box?
Sorry for the hijack!!!

All you need to do is hook up the connections per the instructions, to a 12 volt coil (and I REALLY recommend you get a FLAMETHROWER solid pack 12V coil)
AND
with the HEI distributors, you delete your ballast resistor. As Jaye mentioned, they like a full bite of power. It will work fine on your current electrical system as long as you are running an alternator and not running a 12 volt generator.
The generator will not produce a high enough charge to feed anything on the truck at idle rpm and when th ebattery kicks in to suply power, it's unassisted voltage is not high enough to feed the HEI system properly - it'll work, but it may idle sloppy.
